i need some instructions in plain english. im trying to set up my first home network.. so i know nearly nothing about what im doing!!!! so here is the deal:

i have 2 pc's and an xbox 360. the router is a wired linksys befsr41 v4.2.

ive had the main pc (dell) and the 360 hooked up to the router for a while, it works great. but now i want to add my 2nd pc (compaq) to the network. i have the compaq hooked up to the router and going online already. but i dont know where to go from here. im sure i need to run a network setup wizard or something. but i dont want to screw up my current settings. so i figured that i would ask first, for a change.

i want to be able to transfer files between the two pcs, and be able to stream media to the xbox 360 from either one of them.

the dell (host) is running xp media center edition
the compaq (client) is running xp pro

well, yes you will need to run the network setup wizard and make sure all of the computers are in the same workgroup.

and with the xbox360, the XP pro is slightly different to setting up a media centre PC i think, so you'll have to use the 360 website for that..

thanks for the help. ill have to do some research on workgroups and setting them up.

ive had both pc's hooked to the 360 at one time or another. getting them to stream shouldnt be a problem once i get everything else set up.

the workgroup thing isnt an issue, if you run the Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP, it asks you to define the name of the workgroup you want the computer to be in :D
