i'm moving my desktop into the next room.
i want to keep the router/modem in this room with the laptop.
i've got a belkin pre-n router.
should i get a wireless adapter for my desktop or a cat cable?
i could go either way...i'd prefer the wireless way just b/c it's cleaner...but performance is more important.
i was wondering if a good pre-n card with a pre-n router might be just as good as a cable?
also, i noticed at the store only cat6 cables...is that an upgrade from cat5? is it worth extra money if it is?

thanks.
andrew

cat5e is 100mb/s, cat6 is 1gb/s

cat6 is faster but wont make any difference as not that many people have gigabit routers/switches and network cards.

Personally i prefer cat5e to wireless but thats just me. N is theoretically slightly faster but you rarely get the full speed and some games dont behave if there is dropped packets.

Well if for a desktop, i recommend wired (CAT5), it is a lot easier, as in setting it up. I have had a desktop with wireless and have had problems and hated it! it drove me nuts, so i ended up going with wired.

Yeah, i recommend CAT6 cable vs wifi... i hate wifi... too slow:D

go for cat if you cani have wifi and its sucks so bad also our cable company is shitting us on internet power they say pluged into the main box i should be getting 1000 mbps and i pluged my computer into it and im only getting 50 mbps

they dont know wtf they are talking about

thats the speed between you and the modem/router, your actual broadband internet speed is somewhere between 1 (basic broadband) and 50mb
