Wireless connection died?

Hi all, my first time at your forum. :)

Around noonish (about 3 hours ago in my time zone) I was using my new HP laptop (Pavilion dv8000) surfing the internet. All of a sudden the pages won't load. We have a satellite connection as we live in the boonies and it isn't exactly reliable so I thought nothing of it. However, upon further investigation, the internet on my desktop PC is working perfectly.

So then I checked our old Sony laptop. No internet connection on it either. Both laptops say they are connected but you cannot actually load any pages. I figure it's got to be a router issue.

We've had the same router on the same settings for over a year now. It's a Linksys WRT54GS, our internet connection is with DirecWay  I've been on the Linksys site since this happened and done all of their suggested fixes, none of which have made any difference. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very appreciative. I'm not all that computer saavy, so please speak slowly and in small words. ;)

Thank you! :)

are you sure your in range of the router, dumb i know but it has been done before...

also, try renewing your DHCP license on each laptop, to do this go to START - RUN - type 'cmd' - hit ENTER - type 'ipconfig /renew'

I'm sitting not 2 feet away from the router. :)

I will try your suggestion and post back, thanks. If it helps, I've unplugged the internet cable from the router and plugged it into the laptop and still get nothing. Could it be a laptop issue?

Ok I have done that now. It made no difference. :( The text that appears says "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has it's media disconnected.

Ethernet adapter Local area Connection:

Media state...............: Media disconnected

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix:
IP Address....
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway: (These all have things listed in them, but I think it might not be wise to post them up on a public forum??)

Thanks again. :)

you can post, infact i can guess, they would be 192.168.1.x, 255.255.255.255 and 192.168.1.1, lol, anyway, im gonna leave it open to someone else now, im out of ideas.

Well, I've spent the evening online with Linksys support and 1 laptop is working. However, the pivotal laptop that I need to work (mine ;)) still won't even after all the fiddling the person had me do. Anyone have ideas? :)

Ok, so you have 1 laptop working, first off what did you do to get that working with their tech support?

Secondly, what sort of device do you have on each laptop to have it connected to the router wirelessly? This would either be something built-in to the motherboard of the laptop, or a little card that slides in the side.

EDIT: I'm assuming that the laptop you got working was the Sony laptop?

Hello. The Linksys tech had me go into the wireless settings on the Sony laptop and change them to all automatic settings. I believe it was "automatically get my IP address" and "automatically" do something with the DNS? Sorry, I'm not too good with this stuff and that's all I remember it saying. It came up after a right click on the connection icon, then to properties. If that makes sense at all. :o

On the HP laptop, all the settings were on automatic and the tech had me make them manually. It didn't help at all. :(

Yes, you are correct. It is the older Sony that is working. On that computer we have a wireless card that goes in the side that came with the Linksys router. The HP laptop has it all built in.

Well since no one has any suggestions I am going to restore the computer using the disc that came with it. 2nd time in 2 months, so glad I bought an HP. Thanks for the help guys and gals! :)
