Wireless Dongles

First off, hi!

I have got a number of wireless dongles that are costing a fair bit to use and are only ever used as an insurance should the wireless internet go down!

For this reason I have recently stopped the contracts and am left with the dongles, which I had a thought about. Could I go out and pick up some pay as you go SIMS to put in them, or will this not work?

If so, can they be any SIM or do they have to be special SIMS made to make the dongle work?

Thanks
Mike

I have never had one, so I can't say for sure. However, I doubt that you could do this. If you have Verizon, they don't even use Sims cards. I would imagine that the wireless company would prevent you from being able to use pay as you go.

If you have a smartphone, you could check into a Pay As You Go Modem as a phone. Verizon let me have it for $10/mthly and I only turned it on when I needed it and it was instantly ready once they added it to my plan over the phone. Might be cheaper. The speeds aren't horrible, I was still hitting 128-256k speed on it while downloading. (Not great, but better than paying for something you aren't using).

Basically, you install Verizon's software, hook your phone up to the computer via USB cable, and there's your internet. The only thing you needed to worry about was not going over your monthly bandwidth cap which I never understood because I did a fair bit of downloading with that phone and still never managed to go over it. Even though I'm sure I downloaded more than 5GB (but they said I didn't).

I see no reason why you couldn't do that... after all, it's only a sim card that's in the dongles in the first place, so it shouldn't matter if its a contract sim or a pay as you go, but it's best to check with your network first, just to make sure.

How much is this costing you? There are companies that offer 2Mbit/s (or higher now) wireless internet. You take a usb key with you that is actually a wireless modem. Same price as high speed cable internet usually, maybe a bit more.

Not only does it make a really good backup connection but it's also portable.
