Mkay, here's the setup:
My parents have 5 acres. While we were building the big house we lived in a small 'cabin' creation which had a phone line complete with a modem. My parents moved into the big house, I stayed in the cabin. Telus (I think) came out and rerouted the internet line to the big house, hooking up a wireless router so I could get internet. The wireless router is on the second floor by a window, facing the front of the cabin.
Problem is, my signal has a tendency to fade in and out quite often, not to mention being reeeeally slow at the best of times.
Now, there are several factors that I know contribute to this. 1) My laptop runs Vista which has a problem with my wireless (evidenced by using my XP Netbook). Pretty sure I can't change the card. 2) I only have so many places I can place my laptop to get a signal (weirdly, the downstairs table usually gets a better signal than my upstairs desk). 3) The signal has to travel through glass, parts of wall, across the yard (through the weather), and through the cabin walls (which are plywood).
The only thing I can think of would be to get a more powerful, new wireless router but I'm not sure it's the problem. I could also set up the 2Wire modem where the wireless is right now since I hear it has quite a range but, again, not sure if it would make a difference. Is there anything at ALL I can do to boost the signal? Otherwise, I'm looking at extra money every month for a second phone line/modem...
Help?
