Wireless - Help!

Hi all,

This is my first thread, so please be nice!

There's something wrong with my Windows PC. It won't connect to any wireless network. Not matter what network, or how close I am to the router, it keeps coming up with an error message. It always appears at the same point on the 'loading' bar.

I have reinstalled the drivers but this didn't sort the problem. I tried a system restore, which again didn't solve anything, but on undo-ing the system restore, it fixed itself. Unfortunately the problem has occurred again, and the system restore trick isn't working as before.

networks def is not my weakest area... so ill throw out some simple things... your network is secured I see.... Did comcast set this up for you?

Have you disabled all your software firewalls... like if you have mcAffe personal firewall disable it

My housemates have no trouble connecting to the router, and my Mac connects without any problems, so its definitely the PC. I have McAfee Virus Scanner, but can't see that it comes with any firewall protection. My computer used to connect to my Vigor without any problems, but now I've returned to university, its not liking at wireless networks. The card looks to be in place within the tower.

Hey friend this same problem is also occurred with me some time ago but i have solved that..you may have problem in your network settings i have to problem with that my setting were changed automatically due to that my wireless network was not work..so just pay attention to that.

Good post, and I agree you probably have your ip and subnet set specifically for your school. Go in to the internet properties and let the computer assign them. Let me know whats in there.

Hi all,

Right, I found the IP and DNS settings, and they were predefined, so I changed them to automatic. The problem still occurs. Stupidly forgot to note down what they were so they going to have to stay like that for a while.

Anyone know what I should do? Please assume I'm a bit slow in the head :)

is the router set to give out IP's (is DCHP turned on), what do you housemates network and IP setting look like. Sure there's no mac filtering turned on.

what version of windows are you running. Several WiFi security standards are not compatible with windows xp unless you are running SP 2.

I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP2 I believe. I never had this problem connecting to my Vigor at home. I don't think its to do with the router as such, as it won't connect to any wireless network.

do you have third party software loaded on there or are you using the built in windows WiFi software?

I have a Netgear Wireless Internal Card installed. Is that what you mean?

I just don't understand why it was working one moment, and now its not. The only installation I made, was installing a USB modem for when my modem hadn't arrived. I have since uninstalled it. Could this have changed anything?

Windows built in software as far as I know - i.e. Start > Connect to > Wireless
It then opens the wireless networks within range etc. Is this what you mean?

The wireless card itself is made by Netgear.

Yes, now did you also install any third party software? Any netgear connection software? If so, uninstall it because it can cause conflicts if you have third party running and windows software running at the same time.

As far as I know I only installed the drivers. Whats confusing me is that it has worked in the past. I will try uninstalled it, and starting a fresh. I'll get back to you. Thanks for the help so far.

Right, I've uninstalled all the Netgear related junk. I used the windows wizard to install the drivers for the Netgear wireless card, and the problem still occurs.

Woooo! Just fixed it! I upgraded the drivers to the latest version and it worked. No idea why it did this in the first place.

Thanks all for your help.
