Wireless Internet in Apartment.

First I'd like to say, this is my first post on Computer Forum, so go easy on me, as I am new to this whole thing.

My girlfriend has just moved into an Apartment. She has purchased DSL internet from a local ISP. The ISP hasn't provided any equipment/services as of yet. I am training currently to become a Network Administrator, so I'm letting this situation be my first go at it. She is purchasing a wireless router in the near future, and from what I've read, a Type N Wireless router is the best bet. She has a practically brand new HP Laptop with operating system as Widows 7. Would she need any upgrades to use a Type N Router? Different network card, etc?

Also, correct me if i'm wrong, but to hook up this router and get the internet running all I have to do is: Use an Ethernet cable to run from the wall jack to the router, and install the Router Software on the Laptop?

Once again, if I am completely wrong, please go easy on me. I am new to this. Thanks again!

Well sometimes setting up a router on DSL can be a pita. Depending on the dsl modem you get, its just a matter of hooking up a phone line from the wall jack to the modem, an ethernet cable from modem to router and ethernet cable to computer.

Wireless N will only be beneficial if you plan on transferring files between machines on the network. I would also recommend getting a router with antennaes on it, such as this one.

So she also needs to purchase a Modem in order for her internet to function properly?

The internet provider usually comes and installs the modem to make sure it works properly unless she set this up as a self install.

Why not buy a modem router? Phone line coming in and choice of wireless or wired connection to PC.

The trend these days with ISPs seems to be a box-o-bits on the doorstep. It's not difficult to set up but daunting for those intimidated by PCs and technology. If you only buy the service then it's definitely do-it-yourself. I would think ISP support would be minimal for that.

I have the router John mentioned (WRT54GL). It works very well - good range, doesn't drop connections, doesn't interfere with cordless phones or other wireless devices, and is relatively easy to set up. The ISP should provide and configure the modem for you. You'll just need to connect the router to the modem - very simple to do. :)
