Wireless internet vs wired internet

We might be getting wireless internet in a week or so and i was wondering is it better and quicker to have the wire directly connected to your pc or to have it connect to your pc by wireless? Is there really any difference speed wise?

yea.....hook up with cat5.
its twice as fast. taking a wireless in the backyard is fine
with a laptop will work. downloading is cat5 for speed.
cat5 is fast. Im curious........you been using dial up?
no pun intended but just curious.
cable rocks. dsl is secondary but works well.

dsl will work fine. get a wireless router if ya have a laptop or need for it. not much more money.
cheers...

well you cant use wireless if you still have dial-up i bet there is a way but else no. also unless you have a 54 mb/s line, wireless download wil be the same, the difference you will see is in transfering files localy.

also tremmor, why cat5. cat6 is so much better (more expensive but...):P

alright...im listening. i have always been using cat5. im using comcast cable.
is it going to make a difference? i don't have a problem spending money if it will make a diff. since mass download on newsgroups i would gladly spend the money. whats the difference.

thanks

ya have to remember,
cat5 always was. ive
heard cat6 mentioned before.

can cat6 be used with dsl internet? We recently bumped up to tier 4 dsl with not much increase in the speed. Would cat6 possibly help with this?

Well i'm on dial up right now, but we may be getting a 1mb wireless connection in a few weeks. First they have to come out and see if its available to us which i hope it is lol. Then if it is i would have a 1mb connection instead of the dial up, but there internet goes to my computer and my dads so i was wondering it there was a speed loss or anything connecting it by wireless compared to a direct connect cable to the pc.

yes/no. no you will be able to get to the internet at the same speed as on lan. yes you will have loss if you want to transfer files to a server on your network. so if i want to send a 4 GB file to my samba server, it is faster to be on a fast network
