when there is a wireless internet connection that is open, and doesnt need a key or whatever, can i just go on and use internet or what... do i have to pay?
I hope I've understood what you meant because as I mentioned, I think you can't that just connect and use internet, in addithion, I remember my friend brang his labtop at university for using its net but even that was impossible without user name and password .....and when you asked if you have to pay,
I think as I said before it depends on your system in your countrey for example I must pay if I want to use wireless internet....
There are certainly places which are not encrypted or anyhow protetected from outside access. Such cases are cafes or restaurants which have omnidirectional antennas. Therefore you can connect there (really you should buy somthing to feel like you are not doing something bad). We tried that here in a cafe and all was good...actually we were outside of it....but then bought something inside .
just because there not encrytped doesn't mean you will be able to use there internet. In a lot of hot spots don't you need to vpn to the providers netword first.
If your just driving around town, most likely you are picking up home users wireless networks, it is illegal to connect to them and start using, and if they notice that your on, they might be able to track you down. You can always try it though if you want, lol
I have a wireless network in my home and my PC constantly keeps picking up a network named "linksys"(it's not mine before you ask mine is "BTVOYAGER2100-E1").
I sat there and surfed on thier internet for ten minutes then thought that i should tell them that they were exposed. I didnt know what house it was but it had to be close. I got my dads wireless laptop out and walked up and down the street, the signal strength told me that it was the house opposite.
