Wireless is very slow and unreliable

Hi.

I have got a D-Link DWL - G510 wireless adapter in my new computer. I am having a lot of problems with it and the speed of the internet. My laptop (I am using now) is working fine, loading up pages in a couple of seconds, however the PC is really slow (2 - 5 kbps). It isn't always like this though, sometimes it will speed (5mbits/s ish) up for a few minutes. We have fibre optic broadband, and like I said I don't have any problems with my laptop, neither do my housemates. I have updated drivers, tried different PCI slots etc.

The computer: Phenom II 945, Asus M4A785TD-V mobo, and Windows 7. I chose that card as it had good reviews. So whats the problem? Hardware, software, the router? Might be worth mentioning that my laptop also has Windows 7.

Thanks a lot, Doug :good:

Maybe the drivers don't work well with Win7?

I thought that, so have tried a couple of drivers. It connects OK, with the same signal strength as my laptop. It's just the internet that is slow. I thought that as it was connected the drivers were working?

Cheers, Doug :)

Have you tried updating the firmware on the router? What kind of plan do you have with your ISP?

Hi, I have no idea how to update the firmware! It is a new router though (installed about 2 weeks ago).

We have Virgin Media cable broadband. Which means fibre optic cables. There is a cable modem which is plugged into a router. Like I said my laptop and my housemates are working fine.

One thing I have noted is that I have pulled my computer out a little (it is up against a wall) and it seems to work a little better. I only have a little ariel sticking out the back, I will get hold of a ariel on a lead and try that.

Also, it seems to work fine for the first five or so page loads and then goes bad. Could it be something timing out?

Thanks, Doug.
