wireless n connection speed

I have a Linksys Wireless N WRT300N router, I have a laptop that is wireless N compatible. My problem is, any time I have the wireless network secured, my laptop our any wireless N computer will only connect at 54mb wireless, I cant get the full wireless N speed unless I make the wireless network unsecured, If I make it unsecured it connects at the normal wireless N speed. Why is this? What can I do to fix this problem?
 
What security were you using? Did you try other modes of security such as WPA instead of WPA2, WEP, etc? Before anyone starts to flame here, I'm not saying he should use WEP instead, I'm just wondering if this only happens when WPA2 is used.
 
I have tried every one there is... All do the same thing, Right now i am on WEP, Only reason is I have a few computers that will only connect with wep, anything else I try they just dont connect ( windows xp computers )
