i am getting my own comp, putting in room. meaning i need wireless internet. we had a linkyas shit before, i had to put a chip into the other comp..never worked cause the comp was shit. the computer is down here. my computer will be upstairs, in my room about...40 ft away. theres a modem down here. whats something good, cheap, and wont make my nice new dell slow? not sure if u have to have a fast wireless thing to make your possibally fast comp go fast

try a linksys or belkin wireless... i would assume your new nbew is a b or a g wireless signal.. look for that at the store. Dont buy a wireless router more than 45-50$

There should be a wireless 101. Maybe I will make it.

Linsys is not "shit," as you so eloquently put it, nor will you be able to buy any wireless router and magically have internet on your new (insert explative) Dell. (I hate Dell.) Unless it comes with integrated wireless capability (most laptops do nowadays, but desktops almost never do), you will still need to purchase a PCI (desktop) or PCMCIA (laptop) wireless card as well as the router itself.

There are two standards that are widely recognized for wireless connectivity. The 802.11b equipment (herein referred to as "B") broadcasts on a lower frequency, and as a result penetrates walls, floors, cielings, and objects better than 802.11g ("G"). However, G equipment has a higher throughput speed, and costs slightly more money. The G equipment has a somewhat shorter range due to it's higher frequency.

At only 40 feet or so, either or will be fine. My suggestion would be to remain with Linksys. I use Linksys at home and am VERY happy with the router and card.
