Wireless network for Mac

HI! I have a Macbook Air and I have a problem. I don't know how to connect it to a network to retrieve some files. Air do not have DVD drive, just a USB port for flash memory.

I have also a PC which I want to use as a provider for Internet and files for my Mac but I know nothing about wireless networks. All I found is I need a router which I think I must connect to the PC ( I think using a USB port due to fact I only have 1 Com port, 1 LPT port And 1 USB port free, others are used). I think I will make big files transfers so I need fast data transfer but I don't need range because I will only use it in my apartment... It should be great if I can use the router for Internet access for the laptop. What do u recommend?

setup a wireless network and connect them to it, then enable windows file sharing on the Mac and transfer them that way.

any wireless router will do as wireless networking is standardized. Then create your wireless network in the router configuration panel (or control panel same thing) and connect your Macbook Air to the wireless network and then enable windows file sharing from system preferences > file sharing. You will have to have the account info on the PC side to add the share and copy the files over.

Yes, you can. Hook your broadband modem into the router and the router will share the Internet and network all of your computers.

But I don't have modem, I only connect to Internet by Ethernet and a cable from an ISP. Anyway can I connect the Internet wire to router and then use another cable to connect to the Ethernet port of my Pc? I don't have any wireless transmitter on my PC or network card!

If you have broadband then you have a broadband modem. You'll hook your broadband modem into the router via Ethernet and then either wire or use wireless other computers to set it up. Do you have cable or DSL?

Man I only have a cable but with very good speeds. I am from Romania and Romania is not US.... :D Here almost anyone have Internet by cable from an ISP which has a server for all the clients and they get Internet from US servers or something... I mean the idea is very few got here broadband modems ...

My connection is about 5 MB/s which for me is enough!

Regardless of how the line that comes in, and where it is from, a router will take that and create a separate subnet which can access your external connection.

I am from the US so I have no clue how ISPs set it up in your country, but I would have to assume since networking is pretty much a global standard, regardless of what country you are in, the ISPs in your country probably use some sort of broad band modem at some point. Perhaps you have one installed in your building? Or maybe you share a connection with neighbors? Have you contacted your ISP yet?

Nope I heard they have something called "a switch" placed on each main zone of users, which is some sort of amplifier for the signal that comes from their big server which is similar in size with what hosting companies use ... I used another ISP few years ago and then they had LAN. Now I am not sure about what is the configuration, I cannot find any LAN. I think I connect directly to their server by Utp cable and optic fibre!

What about if I buy an Bluetooth transmitter ? Can I access the Internet using a PC with Ethernet connection to Internet but with that transmitter?

Who runs the network you plug into? You need to talk to them, otherwise I am just guessing in the dark here. If your home, is just wired by a switch, there is something controlling the network beyond the switch. Find out who is in charge of that and ask them.

You mean if my ISP can allow me to have another pc connected to their services? Anyway I wonder if that Bluetooth transmitter can be used with an USB port and the network card can transmit Internet signal by USB ??

bluetooth is ungodly slow. I wouldn't recommend it for networking computers.

Well your actual 802.x wifi connection is way faster. Depending on how your network is set up depends on what you want to get. If you have an extra ethernet plug you can just jack in a wireless access point and use WiFi.

However, like I stated earlier, since I don't know how your network is set up I am just guessing at everything. You should contact the person that is in charge of it and ask them what they would recommend. Someone has to maintain the line, it just doesn't exist on it's own. They will have the answers you seek.

I don't want to complicate things with wireless networks... A usb-usb data cable isn't enough? The BootCamp utility unfortunately do not specify more precise what networks and data sources allows: I only saw "Air" ( whatever does it means...:) ) and "Ethernet"! What about data cable? What about USB flash drive? What about Bluetooth? What about disk image on Leopard partition harddrive? This is kind of embarrassing...
