Wireless Network

I am having trouble picking up my wireless router a friend gave me. I hooked it up to my ethernet and the light shows up saying it is sending a wireless connection, but my laptop is not recognizing it. My laptop usually just picks up signals automatically. Do i need to set up a wireless network for it or what? I do not know what to do with this.

Can you give us some more details? Did you set it up for your network or just plug it in? Have you logged onto the router's GUI to check the settings? Can you hook a patch cable in to your laptop and router an connect to the router that way?
 
I would like to know how to do all that i guess. All i did was hook it up and check the wireless networks around and I couldn't find it. I tried setting up a network, but I believe I failed miserably because i don't know how. And I don't know what all the other things mean.
