Wireless Networking, I got problems

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router and I am trying to make the laptop catch the wireless network. I am on my laptop searching for wireless networks and it says it can't find any.:mad: I HATE LINKSYS, anyway, What should I do? I am doing this for a friend and I have went into the router and told it to accept wireless clients and tried to find it while doing that, I dunno.

PLEASE HELP!!

Why do they put a switch on the side of the laptop to turn the Wireless adapter on and off? If I didn't want wireless I would simply disable it. I feel as if we still use switches for EVERYTHING
 
I've noticed a few laptops that have a switch to enable/disable the wireless. I'm like you, why would they have a switch instead of just disabling it like a regular internet connection.
 
I've come to conclusion why they have that switch. It is to make sure that you are not connecting to anybody else's wireless network, so you know that you are not prone to some type of wireless harm.
