Wireless protocol

Afriend of mine has just returned from working in Japan, he purchased a VIAO LJ while he was there and we can't get it to see wireless networks, is the protocol different in Japan or have we done something wrong !

802.11x is a standard. He may have his radio set to A only or something weird, however, there is no physical differences between a Japanese wifi card and a western counter-part.
