Wireless Repeater? Any good?

Hi everyone.
I've noticed my wireless signal to my wireless router is actually very crap... For a few minutes, it will stay connected with 'Good' connection with 24-36 mbps for 10 mins, and then just lose complete connection for 10-15 minutes. The cycle will repeat itself, sometimes times are longer/random than before. I'm in a 2-storey house, and when I 'point' the antenna of the router ( which is downstairs) to my room upstairs, I get a decent signal that lasts longer. But then my sister's wireless comp gets a weak signal... Then when the antenna is pointed to her room, she gets a good signal, and mine dies out. So I'm trying to figure a permanent solution.

At any given time, the maximum amount of nodes connected to the router (both wired + wireless) are 7... 1 wired desktop, 2 wireless desktops, 2 wireless laptops, 1 iPhone and 1 Sony-Eric. phone with Wi-Fi. Spoilt-rotten family, I know, I wish my family wasn't like this, I take so much technology for granted.

However most of the time, there are usually only 3-4 wireless nodes connected to the router. I was thinking maybe too many nodes are draining my signal?

Should I get a wireless repeater or a new router? Or a better Wireless NIC for myself? I'm an avid online gamer so I really want a stable, fast connection that's wireless. I'm worried a repeater will slow my connection down, as well as the other computers'.

Many thanks for help... Long thread, I know
Thanks !!

That is actually a modem/router combo unit. Those tend to be a pain in the butt to extend the wireless network. Usually I recommend getting a dedicated modem and then a dedicated router separately with decent antennaes on it. And then if you wanted to extend the wireless, its just a matter of buying the same router again and setting it up.
