wireless repeating question?

i have a wnr834b router and i want to put another one in my room to get a better signal. i already have a 25 foot cable going from the router to my room for my xbox. when doing the wirless repeating function can i link the routers together with the cable or do i have to link them together wirelessly ? i want to do that to get my nintendo ds a better signal.

also could i use the lan ports on the other router when they are linked together for my other wired devices?

A wireless repeater takes a wireless signal it sees and acts as a relay device. Meaning packets destined for the original access point are picked up by the repeater and retransmitted. Think of it as an additional hop when you can't quite reach the actual wireless access point. The problem with this is that while you may get the same transfer speeds in a data transfer it increases your latency so if you're playing online games it could make your ping go to an unacceptable level. What you might try doing is connecting both access points and your ISP box (modem, fios router, what ever) to a switch. This way both access points operate seperately and communicate with one another through the switch. You shouldn't notice anything when moving from one access point to another (if they have the same SSID, but on a different channel) because it is the equivilant of quickly unplugging from a switch port and plugging into another one on the same switch. You might be interrupted if you're moving about while downloading a file though. Does any of that make sense / help you figure out what you want to do?

You can have an access point connected wired to the LAN port of the router.It should be configured in AP mode and not as a repeater. To avoid wireless discribencies you can have different SSID's (Wireless network name) and different channels (1 or 6 or 11) to avoid wireless interference. SSID can be different because the router and the access point are going to communicate wired between themselves.
