Then your internet provider will provide the modem/router depending on what you get. If dsl, most provide the modem and router combo unit.

So you are saying that your computer can't detect any wireless networks? Its most likely because your motherboard doesn't have onboard wireless. Do you have a wireless card installed?

Sounds like you need a network adapter. You can pick up one at your local wal-mart for like $15-20. I like Netgear personally but any of them will work just fine.

I would reccomend using an internal adapter. I have a TP Link WDN4800. Pair this with a good router and you can get gaming performance comparable to being directly connected to the modem. Though if your computer will be by the modem, a nice WiFi card and router are not necessary. A cheap router (for your other wireless devices) and no WiFi card will do, unless you play multiplayer games on a laptop or other desktop, in which case I would reccomend a decent router.

Another WiFi card I like, the one I was using before this, is a Rosewill RNX NT250PCe.

Then your internet provider will provide the modem/router depending on what you get.

And John, not every service gives you a router or combo unit. My grandparent's old DSL service only included a modem (though the new service gave them a combo unit), and my cable service only offers a modem.

Usually nowadays any decent dsl provider will give you a modem/router. Comcast cable gives you a modem/router and also ATT Uverse is modem/router. Yeah, you might have off the wall providers that will only provide a modem.

Charter is the #4 largest cable provider in the US, far from what I would call "off the wall". Though yes, it seems that almost every DSL provider offers a combo unit.
