Wireless Router Troubles.

Hello there,

Recently my friend purchased a Linksys Wireless 2.4ghz router. He wants to use it to send internet to his room. He has tried installing the drivers and i guess they have succesfully installed. It says he is recieving a signal to the wireless card but he cannot access the internet.

Some possibly reasons(that we think) are:

1. Hes trying to route to a Mac and a Dell at the same time. I dont think that is the exact problem though.

2. Possibly some interference?

3. Did he mess up with the drivers?

I really can't think of anymore reasons.

Im not that tech savvy when it comes to routers

A network is a network. Both machines should run on TCP/IP so there wouldn't be a conflict. If he gets a signal on the machine, then I would assume problems with the router. Can he ping the router from the Dell? Run > CMD > ping 192.168.1.1 (well, that's what most linksys routers are, you might have to double check that IP) If he can, then you know it's just with the settings in the router...

For the settings, what connection is he using? If it's DSL, there are a few things you must setup within the router in order to tell it to connect. Give us some more info before I get into some details, ok ^^;

a lot of times when people say they are connected to an wireless routerthey are connected, but have not gotten an ip address from the router.

go to start, run, type in "cmd" (w/o quotes), and hit enter. this will bring you to the command prompt.

in there, type ipconfig/all to see what your ip address is and your default gateway. like the_other_one said, linksys wireless routers default address is 192.168.1.1 so that is what your gateway should say. the ip should be something like 192.168.1.X. if it does not say that type "ipconfig/release", then "ipconfig/renew". this will only work if u do not have a static ip set. if u dont know what that is, then u probably dont have it set.

once you are sure you have established a link to the router (you can verify this by pinging the gateway from the command prompt, the command is "ping"), check to see if you are connected to the internet. if u still cant load pages, post back here and tell us what type of internet connection you have.
