Wireless to wired

I have a wireless router at home thats plugged into the phone port and then an ethernet cable goes into the back of the router;

i.e ("I" represents wall with phone port, <----# represents the phone to router cable, #----# represents ethernet cable):

I <----# (wireless router)

If I bought a second ethernet cable and plugged that too in the back of the wireless router (which has 5 ports, one if yellow the other 4 is black - not sure if relevant, into my laptop, would that always create a wired connection, or not?

I <----# (wireless router) #-----# (laptop)

What model of router do you have? Is this a wireless modem/router combo unit? The different colored port usually means that its the internet port and not an lan port. But it could also be the rj11 phone line connection if you have a modem/router combo unit.

But yes that creates a wired connection. You would want to disonnect wirelessly though.

So the port the cables are plugged into a relevant? So for example if I removed the cable from the "internet port" and put it in the next one down, it would loose my wireless connection?

Again, sorry you've lost me, not sure what a rj11 phone line connection is - is this just the cable that goes from the phone jack to the top port on the back of the router?

And again, sorry, not sure if its just a wireless router or a modem/router combo?

To better answer your questions, I would need to know the model number of router you have. You would still need a dsl or cable modem in front of the router if this is a just a plain router and not a modem/router combo unit.

The ports together are called lan ports, which means any device that required internet can be plugged into them and it doesn't matter which one of those 4 ports are used in what order. The other yellow port could either be an internet port, which means an ethernet cable from a dsl or cable modem gets hooked into that in order to get internet to the router. Or you have a dsl modem/router combo unit and that is the rj11 jack that a regular smaller phone line gets attached to.

Like i said before, I would need to know the model number of the router you have, should be listed somewhere on it on a sticker possibly.

I'll get this info to you asap. If for whatever reason you lose "wireless connectivity", would you still be able to get wired connectivity if we set this up, i.e. added an ethernet cable from one of the spare ports to my laptop? I.e. in times where wireless goes down, wired will still be available? Or does it not work that way?
 
Depends on if the wireless part of the router is out or the whole router is out or possibly you just lost signal from the modem. Various things come into play when the internet goes out.

Cool. When you say the router is out, do you mean lost power? I beleive mine flashes blue when wireless is available, and blue goes off when wireless is not available for whatever reason? But theres always power, as shown via the green light on the power icon on the device. What are the main reasons we loose wireless connectivity on home wireless routers? I noticed my wireless connectivity goes dreadful between 4pm/7pm, any idea why that could be? It will connect and then go offline every 5 mins.
 
You may be having internet provider issues which will make you lose wired and wireless internet. You may have wireless interference somewhere in your home or near your home.

Could peak times affect if my wireless is available or not. It just seems strange how it goes off during 4-7 which is when most people in the UK are coming home from work and potentially connecting to the Internet. At less peak times, i.e. sunday morning 8am its always completely fine.
 
That is a stand alone router. Where is the modem located in the house? Do you have any other routers in the house? If that router is the only one in the house then you need an ethernet cable from the dsl or cable modem going to the single port on the router.

next to it there is some sort of device, an ambit e08c013. going into that is what seems a power cable, an ethernet cable, and some other sort of cable. we have cable tv, could that be why?


also, when i put an additional ethernet cable in one of the lan ports and hook it up to my laptop, everybody else in the house loses their wireless internet connection, it says it can (and is) connected to the network but not connected to the internet? why?
 
The ambit is your cable modem. The ethernet cable coming from it must go into the yellow port(internet) on the router and not one of the other 4 ports. Thats why only one person at a time can get internet. Once you plug the cable into the correct port and reboot the router it should automatically give everyone internet.

Thats the thing, it is... and always was... the ethernet cable out the modem has always gone into the internet port on the router, thats never changed...

In that configuration, as many folk as required can connect to the internet wirelessly, the second i added an ethernet cable into one of the lan ports, and hooked the other end of to my laptop, everyobody else lost wireless, they were connected to the network, but it said they did not have internet access?
 
As long as the modem is hooked up to the yellow port and pc's are hooked up the black ports then its fine. If other computers lose internet when you hook yours up with a cable then either its a router issue or you have an issue with your onboard network card causing problems with the wireless. Have you tried doing a hard reset on the router to set it back to defaults?
