i consider myself somewhat knowlegable when it comes to home networking + wireless but any way i live in dorms on a college campus which does NOT have INTERNET i pay the cable company for roadrunner and i use a linksys wrt54g wireless router due to spliting the cost with other roomates and neighboring dorms and im tired of changing the wep key when people all the time i was wondering if there is a way to use usernames and passwords through the router or through the use of software of firmware on the router any suggestions would be very greatly appreciated

THANKS

I'm not sure about user-names and passwords right off, but here's what I do on mine. Disable all security and get all your roommates connected at once. Get their MAC address's and setup a filter so ONLY those MAC addresses can connect. For added protection, don't broadcast your SSID.

I can't tell you exactly how to do this as I'm not too familiar with the Linksys firmware, but it should allow it.

It does allow it as i have mine set up this way. Do you have the cd that came with it it actually has a step-by-step help guide for only allowing certain mac addresses and such on it. Also can i just say wow a college without internet what the heck kind of college are you going to and I sure hope they are not charging you much for that.

no i dont have the cd lost it when i moved dorms and its a tech college beleive it or not they actually have an IT part here to but its 35 a month but its alot fast than anything we would get from the college 47Mb/s

i have all of that in place and then some im just tired of handing out wep keys to everyone and i dont feel safe leaving it unsecured and useing the mac adress filtering and not broadcasting ssid its just not enough security for me personaly and what im thinking is like getting a logon screen when you try to connect and doing it that way along with the encryption if possible
