well first of all, you don't need a usb adaptor if you have built in wireless, second pcmcia is typically faster and more reliable than the usb adaptors, but regardless....anyways on your laptop you should be able to find something in your network connections for the wireless, but the majority of the setup is with the router. You need to enable dhcp, just look for it and set it to auto. You also want to add the laptop's mac address if the router is using mac filtering. Also make a note of what security, if any he is using (such as wep, wpa-psk, and the ssid) because you will need to tell the laptop these if he has them enabled. When you are on your laptop with the wireless turned on, Windows should tell you that there are wireless networks within range of the computer. Try to connect to the wireless network using the security settings you got from the router, if applicable. From there, Windows should take care of the rest

i took my laptop down to the pc shop and they set it all up for me and they showed me it was working.

how do you configure the router to get it to work when my bf had his pc he didnt set it up so it could be wirless enabled so if he does that will it work if not how else can we get it to work

anyone know

thanks

well if he has a wireless router, he can enable the wireless if it is currently disabled in the router's options. In your web browser, type in either 192.168.1.1 or.2.1 or perhaps .3.1, depends on the company, one should work. Anyways, once you've connected there, you ought to be able to change all the options in there such as enabling wireless, setting security, etc. The easiest, but definitely least secure thing to do would be to enable dhcp, broadcast ssid, and not set security, but that leaves your whole network open. I would say for ease of use and a little bit of security (also should be simple) do the first two things and then set either a wep or wpapsk security passphrase, you'll need to configure the laptop with that phrase though too. I'm sure you could google up a nice step by step guide for this stuff if you want to as well

thanks for the help guy`s we have sorted the problem out we configured the router to work i got a signal but still wouldnt work.i had got a zoom usb.so we rang aol and they only use certain usb`s they only use either netgear or speedtouch so i had to pay another £35 and buy a netgear usb now it is working
