Hi
Im new to this forum... looking forward to hearing everyones advice here,

I am wanting to network a computer that is a distance away with my wireless network at my home.

wlan desc.jpg

The above picture is my scenario. If it doesnt work, Ive attached the picture.

In reference to the picture, I wonder if i can hook a yagi or parabolic dish to the SMA connector of the computer PCI wireless card to the computer at the High location and hook another yagi or parabolic to the wireless router at my home at the low location. Is this possible? How easy would this be?

The computer at the high location has a PCI Network Card with a SMA connector. The wireless router at my home has two TNC connectors.

Offer some suggestions. Hopefully this forum will be more open to opinion and suggestion rather than bashing you for doing things a certain way, unlike other forums out there :)

You'll need some expensive equipment to reach 1.5 miles. You are better off getting internet service at that location.

This is a repeater networking installation for amateur radio and emergency services... all volunteer and non-for-profit. Virtually impossible to establish internet service. Any possible way for this to happen, as I have been describing? Enlighten me on the 'expensive' things you speak of.

Many thanks.

You'll have to do some research. It's almost like the wireless internet that neighborhoods use. They have a central antennae and all users have a dish pointing to it.

I was on wireless internet about 7 years ago where the tower was in town which was a couple miles away and I had dish on my roof receiving the signal.

You may need a grid parabolic antenna like these:

Take a look at this: http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Highest-Gain-Wifi-Antenna--A-Grid-Parabolic-24-Ghz
It CAN be done! The distance you're talking about would be a walk in the park.

Glad to see another amateur radio operator out there! (I'm KB1POR by the way). I know exactly what you are trying to do, I've looked into similar scenarios myself. There are ways of doing this, but it depends on a few factors, such as is this in a congested area with lots of nearby wireless AP's that could interfere?

You will need directional antenna's or dishes, at both sites preferably.
