wmp genuine requirement

do you think now that windows is requiring genuine windows for windows media player 11, that more people will turn to real player and winamp, and that real player will become more popular this point on?
 
Not really, because that requirement will only be big news for people who are running illegal software on their machine. For us users who abide by the rules, it's no reason for any habits to be changed. Besides, every anti-piracy technology can and has been broken, and Microsoft themselves acknowledge that, so I'm sure if someone were tenacious enough to overcome it, they would.
 
Besides, do people really want to run WMP11? Really, WMP6 will run anything as long as it has the correct codecs. Or, I've yet to find anything it can't run. Newer versions are just bloated with features that I personally have no use for. Though, I've yet to try IE 7 or WMP 11. Maybe I can sometime this summer just for the heck of it.

youre understimating the number of illegal users. even if you count half of china that is 500 million people. not to mention india who has a billion people. i think the changes will be drastic, in terms of people switching to real player, winamp, quicktime and firefox.
 
I always find it interesting when people bring up the phrase "most popular".

I could care less if a product is the most popular... With regard to this thread, I do not care if more people turn to Real Player. I have tried Real Player and it is horrible! ... The_Other_One is right, older versions of WMP get the job done without all of the fancy bells and whistles that are more than likely full of bugs....

You can either use a product because it is the "most popular" or you can test various products and decide which YOU like the best.

Since this forum asks you to obey the rules and not discuss illegal use of software, everyone here should have a legal version of windows which makes the "genuine test" of no consequence...
 
When ever Bill unloads new anti-piracy software the cure is out in less than 24 hrs. If you know where to look, If you actually need it. I run legal software, But I do keep my eyes open.
