i have a hp compaq nc6220 and every time i try to get it to boot up it either stays blank with the console lights flashing or on (power, battery, hard drive) or it boots to the hp logo with a message that says press f10 to enter rom based setup. sometimes it enters setup and others it locks up on entering setup. it boots fine one out of every 20 or so tries but blue screens when i disable and re-enable the cd drive so i can reinstall the os, cd drive wont do anything but reports no problem. please help! running windows xp

Could be any number of things really. It is most likely a failing hard drive or motherboard, seeing as how it won't post most of the time. Judging from the sporadic appearance of the problems, I would say your motherboard is on its way out. Is it still under warranty?

I agree with cardboard. I am leaning towards motherboard. If the hard drive were broken that you would still be able go around the bios without issues. Try taking out your hard drive and see what happens. If nothing happens then your mobo is probably dying but if somethind does happen, say the computer doesnt lock up or anything anymore, then it was your hard drive.
