Won't recognize hard drive when formatting

I can't seem to figure out what's wrong with my hard drive. Right now I am booting Slax (linux) from cd just so I can use the internet. Everytime I go and try to reformat my new hard drive, it's saying that the hard drive isn't there but it is being read in the BIOS.

I dunno if it's because it's a dell but none the less, I should be able to format this hard drive somehow with using this computer.

Help would be greatly appreciated, I have homework I have to do and no computer!

The last time I installed a HD, I had to do it through "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> Adminstative Tools" -> "Computer Management" -> "Disk Management"

Also, most HD suppliers have utilities that are self booting that you can use in a "DOS" type enviroment. I have an old Westrern digital disk for this.

If it's an SATA drive, you may need to load the correct drives during the windows setup(that prompt about SCSI controllers)
