World of Warcraft on dialup - to clear this up

World of Warcraft works on dialup.

This thread is just for anyone on dialup that wants to start playing and is confused on whether or not it will function properly or not. Despite the answers I got from this thread previously, it works. I play it. PvP is fine too.

I hate people who try to play new multiplayer games online, it makes the game bad for everyone, lol.

Older games werent as big of a deal, but newer games (especially fps), need low-pings in order for the game to be enjoyable.
How can playing on dialup make the game bad for everyone? I play World of Warcraft, one character on a PvP server, and I can attack, get attacked, run around and do whatever I want without that much lag.

Latency tends to stay between 400ms and 700ms or so, no lag though.(except in huge cities sometimes)

About the cities, I've been to Darnassus, Stormwind, Ironforge, Orgrimmar and Undercity and I've only had lag in Ironforge near the bank once. Everywhere else was fine.

Hope that clears it up for other dialup users. ;)

Good to know, just to clear it up, what dial-up service do you have and what is your usual connection speed? (So that others can compare their own...)

400-700ms?! I thought it was bad when I reach 300-400..... That's definitely going to cause some conflicts between you and a person who has a better latency; probably in favor of the person with the better latency, but overall, you're probably going to appear laggy or sluggish to someone else in-game, not for just your gameplay......

ya, i guess thats playable. but im anywhere from 50-125ms 90% of the time on cable.

FYI tho, if u were a level 70 that runs a lot of instances with a "real" guild that is very into what they do, dial up would not be acceptable at all.....its definitely noticeable to other players at that level.

yeah, with a ping like that your gonna be bouncing round their screen like a bouncy ball :D

People who game online with dial-up shouldn't be allowed to game online. Maybe WoW can tolerate the lag, but especially FPS games, anyone with a ping of 150ms or over is usually auto-kicked, because it makes the game horrible for everyone.

If you are on dial-up, do us all a favor and dont play FPS games online!

I think my wireless connection puts my ping up, and when the other two laptops on my laptop are connected it;s not even worth trying.

:confused:How does that work? haha! :D

I also game wirelessly, but I only have one other computer on our ~1.3 meg connection. I can tell when someone's streaming video or downloading something, but other than that, there's not much difference in ping.

And on CSS, anything above about 180 isn't tolerated, and the game is nearly unplayable on pings in the 300 range.

When I started playing WoW at launch I was on a dialup connection and playing on a P3 800MHz, 256MB ram, with an ATI 9600 256mb video card.

The game was enjoyable but aside from possibly showing up laggy to other players it was relatively calm on my end.

Now prior to the patch where they implemented something to help with the lag/latency while in Orgimmar (I play Horde), going into a major city was just a nightmare.

Now that I am playing on a cable connection I obviously do not have any complaints because I am usually never higher then 100.

Aside from raiding or grouping in WoW, I don't think dialup players are that bad unless they have connection problems. I used to run Molten Core on dialup with very little problems. From time to time though running Alterac Valley was not fun as my latency would skyrocket and I would get disconnected from the server.

Hmm, nice to know and somewhat interesting.

I agree with OMEGA, people with dial-up shouldn't play online or even hardware specifications that can't 'handle' the game. When I used to play Warcraft III: Frozen Throne I really got pissed at people who lagged in ladder in random teams resulting a disadvantage to win. Also in custom games 1+ missing players ruin the game when the game is at most fun at full house.
