I put some new thermal greese on my cpu and i tried a new method of adding it and i turned on my pc booted windows and my CPU was 88c!! So i did an emergency turn off.. and re added now its 25 - 32 idle again :) But the thing is have I in anyway damaged it?

Its and intel 650 3.4ghz 2MB L2 Cache (LGA775) thanks!

I bet it's fine as long as it wasnt on that hot for a while, next time check the temp in BIOS first.

You should be fine. It would be worth running some sort of stress test on it now the temperatures are better. One that has an error checking facility. If it passes, then no harm no foul. :)

hmm, i wouldn't be worried about the damage from that one event, i would however be concerned that the motherboard did not shut its self down when overheating, what motherboard is it?

the Gigabyte GI8955X ROYAL. And it seems ok temps are at 23c idle! :) Ill run prime95 today some time - thanks all

check in bios for your cpu temp shutdown settings, they could save your cpu in the event of fan failure

LOL no its just a dude that goes DANGER - DANGER!... DANGER - DANGER!... lol

in total i have had 3 issues 2 when it went to 66c - my fault and this one at 88. I turn them off after about 10 secs though.

Seems to be "better" though maybe i throtted it at 66c before and this has fixed it... weird.
