Worst computer problem ever...I really need help!

So I built a computer for my friend. It was working fine for about six months. Today, it would detect the IDE drives, etc., then it would say "detecting DMI pool data" and then it would give the message "ntrdl data missing. press ctrl-alt-del to retart". So, inserted the windows disk, booted from the CD, and tried to copy the ntrdl data to the boot record. It said that access was denied. Then, I ran fixboot and fixmbr. That did absolutely nothing. I changed the boot order, checked the IDE cables (i even replaced them) and tried everything else that I could think of, and still nothing happened. Then, my friend tells me "oh ya I had no antivirus program, do I need one?" I had a virus on my compy before that wrote files to my master boot record (mbr) I think that he had that virus or one similar. But then wouldn't rewriting the master boot record work? I tried it and it didn't. If I can't find a solution, I'm just going to wipe the drive and start all over again, but I would really like your guys' opinion before i do anything that drastic.

Did you try hooking his HDD to you computer and seing if you can't go in and fix it? Worst comes to worst just you could do that and at least save his files. If you know some linux you could boot up a copy of Knoppix STD and see what can't be done. The easyest way would be just to wipe it clean and start over.

Ya I tried it in my compy and still the same message. I know absolutely nothing about linux. Thanks for the help though!

Are you trying to boot to his hdd in your computer?
I was saying boot up your pc with his as a slave and see if you can go in and fix his or copy the parts from yours to his. not boot up to his in your pc... :D

Thank you very much! I did that and I got all 468 of the viruses off. Look at my post in the off-topic area to see a screenshot.

Haha Not problem, i do that all the time. i can get $60-$80 for a computer "Tune up". Fyi his hdd would have never booted to your pc unless you have the same mobo and what not... other wise i find that most of the time it will just blue screen
