worth a new scanner?

i want to put all our photographs on the computer and already have a scanner (old so not too good) and was wondering if it is better to use the one i have and scan in the photographs or get one that can scan negitives? which would get better qualty?

as far as i know any scanner will scan negatives its just that you need the template for them to go in and photoshop or something similar to invert the image you get

The scanners that are made to scan negatives basically just have a light you place over them. I'm pretty sure you could rig something up to do the same thing.
