Worth upgrading from 939?

Hey
A few days ago I was asking in the forums about upgrading to a dual core 939. I have shopped around and the opteron 180 seems to be the best available for 939. I was thinking about it and is it really a smart investment?? Is it worth investing in 939 technology. I assume the only way its going is out, never to return???? I think I will put off upgrading for a good few months and do a bigger upgrade to a new socket. Please tell me which socket is the most future proof!! I foolishly built my first pc ,using 939 at the start of 2006 not knowing it was coming to an end :(
Im open to either Intel or AMD.
I am not big into games, the most extreme I get is when I let myself go on the Sims2. I multitask. Always have itunes, IE, msn, outlook and usually photogallery open and more often than not i will be recording tv in media centre aswel as having the usual stuff like antivirus and mobile device centre open.
Thanks alot in advance!!! :)

If you're not much of a gamer I don't see why you just don't invest in a S939 dual-core, And wait to upgrade till later. S939 is a dead format yes, But The platform itself is equal to Am2. It has no obvious bottleneck, No downfall, other than its deadness.

So you can spend $800 on a new LGA775 system.. Or $150 on a new chip. They will both deliver the same performance for what you are using it for.

Just got a S939 X2 4200+ Toledo (OEM) to replace that exact same cpu in my moms computer and it was a MAJOR improvement

I was thinking about the x4200 also. From where I always buy my computer stuff the x4200 is €69 and the opteron 180 is €169. Anybody know if the difference in performance justifies the price difference??? I cant order from newegg btw because they dont ship international.

Don't invest in it. It is outdated!
Leave until next year to get a brand new one. (AMD AM3 socket/ intel new 45nm CPU...)

Later this year AM2+ is coming out, but I bet it will be around November or December before any Desktop Phenoms X4 Agenas or X2 Kumas. AM3 with DDR3 isnt coming out till late 2008 if that quick.

Not IMO. The Opteron is a stress tested chips that has it's voltage and clock speed lowered. This doesn't matter for an overclocker, But if you aren't going to be doing any of that nonsense;) Then the cheaper x2 would get my vote.
