Would an AMD upgrade be cheaper?

Hi,

I'm upgrading my processor from a Celeron D and so I need a new motherboard to go with it. Initially I looked at the Intel path and, by upgrading to a E4400 and compatible motherboard, the total goes to $185.99 (shipping not included). Now before I spend this cash I want to make sure I checked all options and so I want to have a look at what AMD has to offer. Here's the deal:

  • I want a dual-core processor so that I can use FRAPS without FPS hit.
  • The processor must run 1:1 with PC3200 DDR 400 RAM - no bottlenecking or anything.
  • The motherboard must be compatible with DDR 400 RAM.
  • The motherboard must have a AGP slot, a PCI-E slot is nice but optional.
  • The AMD CPU should perform at the same level (or above it) as the E4400.

Thanks everyone.. I would do this myself but AMD's titling for it's processors is so confusing..

Ok I'm going to get you something.

(Hope you choose AMD)

I'm pretty sure the 3800+ is not equivalent to the E4400.

That motherboard doesn't support DDR RAM either :(.
Anyways my biggest concern is that it runs 1:1 with the PC3200 DDR ram Will the 4200+ or 4800+ do that?

Sorry Man, I'll try to get something.

Very good processor, Im pretty sure it is equal to E4400. Good for overclocking. Got pretty good reviews.

Wow that seems like a good deal and according to Toms hardware the 4200+ is slightly better. Too bad the mobo is out of stock :(.

get the fx-62 way better preformance and the price went down crazy, save up some more money and u wont have to upgrade for a while : P

Hey Man, Just wait for the Motherboard to come in stock, it is probably worth the wait. Oh and by the way Chupacabra, He needs a AGP slot, and a board the supports DDR 400 Ram, and supports a AMD Dual Core Procesor.

Thats just on encoding and movie viewing, You can't judge a processor by that?
But the website that I posted doesn't only show encoding and movie viewing benchmark !!!

Just look at the other pages........

The overall performance of E4400 is better than 4200+
E4400 is very close to 4600+/4800+ in performance
