Would Like to Build a New Desktop

I've noticed on other forums that Newegg is the place to go for parts, are there any other places to go? Also, how do I know if parts are compatible? I've never built a computer before and I want to build one optimum for gaming. Any advice?

If you have a microcenter in your area you can buy parts there as they usually have good in-house deals.

Build wise, you want to make sure your CPU matches the mobo socket and the ram matches the mobo/CPU.

Feel free to post specific questions regarding compability. Post a list of the components that you've put together and we'll check it over. We'll nudge you in the right direction if something looks wrong or if there's a better component for the application. I sure got good advice when I posted the same question a couple of years ago. To me the only thing better than researching the components is assembly - Then holding your breath the first time you push that button.
 
Okay after some shopping around I've found at least a case and a motherboard.

the case is going to be the NZXT Guardian 921

and the motherboard hopefully will be the ASUS Rampage iii Gene.

Not too sure about the power suply yet becase i dont know how much i will need. But I already have a graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT) That i am hoping will be compatible with the motherboard i've chosen. I've also read about using two different graphics cards? How do you do that?!
 
ASUS Rampage iii Gene - X58 plaform. I recommend ATX mobo instead.

X58 platform => LGA 1366 => core i7 930 (common choice)
=> triple channel RAM => 3 x 2GB DDR3 1600/2000 RAM

Video card - depends on budget. I would assume you build a gaming/ video editing machine, or if you just use for web stuffing, you won't need core i7.
Since you can afford X58 platform, Video card recommended would be 5830/ 5850/ 5870/ GTX 460 1GB

PSU - $60-70 500 - 600W for Single video card; $100 - 120 for 750W for Dual video card
 
I've been doing some comparison shopping and I think I've come up with a motherboard and a processor. So far I've got the ASUS M4A89GTD PRO and the AMD Phenom II x4 (3.4GHz) Black ed.

Will the Nvidia GeForce 8800 gt be compatible with that Mob?
 
Yeah any mobo with PCI-E is combatible but why buy an 8800Gt in this day and age? There are much better options now.

Well I am looking to eventually buy a better one but the 8800 is what I have in my desktop right now and I don't have the budget for a better one just yet. So I just wanna make sure that until I can afford one that that one will suffice. Haha
