Would like to burn an AVI file to a CD&watch on DVD player- do i need a dvd burner?

well that depends. You can burn your film onto a cd in vcd format (or spread it over several cds) and then watch it on most dvd players. For this you only need a cd burner

You can burn it to a dvd and watch it on a dvd player. For this you will need a dvd burner

VCD is a standard. The resolution is 352x240 @ 29.97FPS

The audio is stereo, 44.1Khz, I usually set it at 224kbits/second

Google for a program called TMPGEnc and it will convert the AVI in to a VCD compliant MPEG file.

You can then use Nero to burn the MPEG file to a VCD.

VCD is one of the choices of the types of disk nero burns. Nero will do the conversion itself but I don't trust it. It's done burning before you know it's done it right. I like to have an MPEG I can see before I burn it.

I used to have a lot of problems with Nero too. Figured out if you keep the burn speen within standard burning speeds (12x or under), then it is super stable. To hit the faster speeds requires a strong buffer and a good CAV burner and good quality media.

Thank you very much i will look into this. Anymore ideas or tips would be great thanks!
Some avi,s need re-encoding before you can burn as a vcd this can be a lenghty process but there are numerous programs that can do it for you , Tmpeg , Main concept to name but a few

Then from mpg to vcd what is best to use?
Once you have a VCD compliant Mpeg file just use Nero and choose VCD as your option instead of DataCd or Audio CD.

My biggest problem wasn't really that it would screw up burning, but that it would have trouble encoding the AVI into an mpeg and burn the screwed up mpeg on to a VCD. And then when I go to play it it looks all funky. So I do my encoding before I use nero. Then I can watch the mpeg and see if it came out ok.

i have just burned a vcd with nero 7 . i wacked a few mpg and mpegs together and i play the vcd and it doesnt work on my dvd player :( did i do something wrong? i will check on another dvd player i have. i didn not use super vcd but just vcd should i try with svcd ?

if you can convert it to a regular mpeg, and then just burn it onto a cd, it will work in most newer dvd players. granted of course that your dvd player is capable of playing mpeg's.
most of them now a days can play mpeg and jpeg files

but i have a few mpegs i want to burn. Some are called mpg's aswell as mpeg's, what is the difference?

Ok so i have a dvd recorder which i found the vcd worked on, would a svcd work on the others that didnt accept the vcd ??
cheers
