goign from an amdathlon x2 5200+ windsor core at 2.9
to a phenom 9600 agena at 2.3

if not how much of an overclock would i need on the quad core?

That would be a pretty decent upgrade, i upgraded my CPU from a Athlon X2 5200+ to a AMD 7750 BE and it made a diffrence, so im quite sure a Phenom CPU would make quite a diffrence, and it will probably overclock better than your CPU if you ever need to overclock it

It would be an instant great upgrade. Phenom will double the stuff you can do. Also 600MHz are not gonna affect your performance that much. If not, at all.

ya clock for clock that phenom will kill the athlon even at 2.3 i used to have the 9600 black it ran everything great

The Quad will be a great upgrade,even though it runs at a slower clock speed,the extra cores will make up for it imo.

and im sure you could overclock it

I would not pick any Phenom processor that doesn't end with a "50." They have possible bugs. Take a look at the AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core Processor. It is only about $126 at NewEgg.com presently.
