Would this be okay for school use?

I'm just wondering if these specs would be fast and reliable for writing essays, browsing, editing, office programs etc.

Upgrading to: 500GB SSHD
Ram: 8GB DDR4
Screen: 15.6”
Resolution: Full HD 1920 x 1080
Graphics: GeForce MX150 2GB GDDR5 (GTX1030)

More than enough, although I'd avoid an SSHD. They're notorious for failing and speed difference isn't worth the price jump. Might as well get a true SSD.

Also, how many hours would a 4-cell 3220 mAh Li-Polymer battery last? I also found a ssd model so that part is all good.

Depends a lot more on the hardware its running and workload, not so much that capacity of the battery itself. Usually models will have an advertised/estimated battery life. Based on specs and age I'd guess at least 5-6 hours, probably more.
