To me the Alienware Desktops are over priced, but then again, would you buy an Alienware? Jone me in a quest to find the most expensive Alienware on alienware.com and then lets find all the parts that its made of and see if we can't build that thing for cheaper. Come on people, lets just embark on this journey and see what we discover, is Alienware a RIP OFF? Or is it a GOOD DEAL? And yes, I do need your help on this. Join me on this mission. Its time to discover the truth. Plus, does Alienware use Geforce or ATI and maybe even why (if they only use GeForce that is).

Well that's a silly comparison -- for the Alienware you're paying for labour and warrnaty ... so if you want a meaninful comparison, we need to factor in labor and warranty into our prices as well -- and yes that includes the time it takes for product research. Now, under a more realistic light, Alienware boxes, while overpriced, arent that terrible.

No.

I have seen to many people get very expensive paper weights that are constantly in need of repair.

Not unless I wanted to be overcharged for a computer that I could get for 50% less off newegg.com
So your labour is worth $0 to you? lol ... get enough people like you and you can change the minimum wage laws to $0/hr. lol

true i mean if i were in a factory build comps id hate it but, when you do it ur self it is fun
(no the name is wrong ive built befor)

Its not like that. Its just we would rather save a few bucks and put in 30 minutes of work putting it together.

Why would you pay yourself?.......I don't think you'd get anywhere..in fact I think you'd lose money...Believe me, I tried it with my lemonade stand. The only customer was me......If I got a dollar for every glass I drank, I would have an unbelievable amount of wealth...Good thing the packet only cost 50c or else I would be in debt like an old without medicare.

Thanks [-Omega-] for donating money for my new computer! You rock man!
Hay omega, do you think you can donate oh, say..........$800? I would greatly appreciate it!:D

As you guys get older you will realize that time is money. Your time will always be worth something, even if you're smokin' a dube with the old lady.

You have to put a value on your time. Would you work for $5.00/hr? $10? $50? I work for $50/hr. I assessed what I felt my time was worth and what I would be comfortable dealing with someone else's headaches. Did you realize that it is not worth it for Bill Gates to stoop down and pick up a $100 bill? Just as an amusing example. Knowing him he probably would though.. lol

Anyways.. I was at the bank the other day. The moron in front of me obviously ran a business, and he was taking up all kinds of time cross-examining the teller because they charged him an extra $2.50. He probably used up $40 worth of time for a piddly 2 and a half bucks.

So, when you build a rig you have to factor in what it would cost you to make it if you make this comparison. I charge about $130 labour to build a rig. Give or take, depending on the machine. So maybe use that as your starting point.

You don't work for free, do you?

Very good point, SirKenin. Those computers don't just magically put themselves together... Anyhow, now I wouldn't buy one because I can have more options by building it myself than buying a corporate-built machine. Previously, I would have because I wasn't as efficient at putting that type of thing together (about 6 or 8 years ago...) and now I can do it a bit easier... Now, the nice thing about getting a retail computer is that you are pretty much sure that it will work when you get it, and not have to worry about something being defective or incompatible, at least not right away.

One of my friends ran into this problem and had to get two video cards replaced that he ordered from Newegg that were DOA, and he basically was without a computer for a month. Now, is that little extra price over the raw parts worth that initial reliability, yes. Just not to me.

This is where I believe that the old phrase "more than the sum of its parts" describes the situation very well.

Well you can't base everything on a saying "time is money." Some times you just got to enjoy life and take time to smell the roses. To think of time and convert it to money is like taxing on every breath you take. Greedy. If we don't take time to just relax then what is the point of life? Work? No. Life can't be about money. So maybe were paying our own debt in wasted time and not worrying about a mid life crises buy finding bargons. This is what we enjoy and what we like to do. Thats why were take time from our live to do this, because we enjoy it. So let me ask you, are you wasting time by helping the people in this forum? Does that mean you waist money? Cose I'm not going to pay. Blessed be the saint who does. But dont you think the labor and research cost would still underway of buying the Desktop itself. If you want to think of it as money, then think of it like that. But time is presious, we all know that. And as we get older, time get shorter. But maybe its time we enjoy life. Not worry about it.

Didnt make a whole lot of sense out of that... but plain and simple, making your own desktop is cheaper. Unless you make some ten grand comp on newegg and get the cheapest one you can find on Alienware, but then it isnt fair anyways. No argument, making your own is cheaper. And more funz!

Sure, why not :P

I havent read the entire thread, but I wouldn't buy an Alienware unless they had a 50%+ off coupon.
