The 9800GT is a 256bit card, the 4770 only 128bit.
Plus the Memory Clock on the 9800GT is 1800Mhz
and the 4770 is only 800Mhz.
How does that make the 4770 faster?

The memory on the 4770 is GDDR5 vs the GDDR3 on the 9800gt, plus its clocked at 3200mhz.

Simple googling,3200 is the stock memory clock but the memory bandwidth means alot less than the gpu itself, which the 4770 is more powerful than the 9800gt. Also, GDDR5 overclocks like a madman.
9800gt Memory bandwidth:
60.8GBps
4770 Memory Bandwidth:
51.2GB
9800gt Theoretical Processing Power:
504 GFLOPS
4770 Theoretical processing power:
960 GFLOPS

most reviews say that the 4770 makes up for its 128bit bus with its gddr5. also, they cost less and use less power than a 9800gt.
