Yeah, I completely agree. That's why I like the system that Guild Wars uses, specifically assigning an item to a specific user. Eliminates this first come, first serve crap. And what was up with the Lucky Charms thing at the end?
 
Dunno, but in WoW there are different loot options, such as master loot which gives the items to the person in charge, and he hands them out to those who need it most, but still you never know whos gonna just decide to take stuff.
 
In raids you always use ML.. in ubrs etc,. well, mainly too then.
well... people can always turn out to be, well,.. not so nice (to put it mild). nothing you can do about it
