I was reading some reviews on Tigerdirect about the 24 to 20 pin adapters you can buy, and some guy said the adapter isnt necessary b/c you can plug the 20pin cable from power supply directly into a 24 pin MOBO, leaving 4pins open. Will this work? can i do the same for the wierd 8pin CPU connector with my 4pin connector?

You probably will need that 8pin plug. However, your friend is correct about the 20pin ATX plug. Many motherboards will work just fine with a 20pin power supply, assuming you have everything else required...

I'd just get a new power supply. Most any new one has a 20+4pin plug. Sites also typically show all the connections, so you can see if it has the 8pin plug as you require.
