WTH??? windows 7 , need more security?

I have a new system that has been running about 3 months for my home set up. I am using windows 7 with IE 8or9 dont rememeber. For security I am using Microsoft security essentials, and Malwarbytes. For maintenence I am using CCleaner and the defraggler. I am the only one that usese the computer for school and You Tube. When I am surfing the net I do not go to shaddy sites.
My problem started yesterday after making some small changes to the system and , Defragging, and running MSE and Malware scans that came up clean then downloading SPECCY from Piriform. Later in the day I noticed when I clicked on the windows logo a lot of info was missing from the dialog box. It still showed all the stuff on the right of the box , like MY COMPUTER and CONTROL PANEL but everything on the left was missing. I went to You tube and had trouble there also loggin in and could not. I went to my e-mail and was not able to get into that also . Computer said I needed to download more software to view and log in. Things were pretty much going south from there so I did a sytem restore to 3 days ago and the computer locked up and sat running with no screed for about 4 hours. I also tried to download hijack this and was not able to. I am gooing to try again and get a log from Malware also and post. I dont know if I got a virus or what happened:confused:

can anyone tell me if there is any problems here , I did a restore system to 3 days ago so my actual problems might not show. BUT, i do want to figure out whats happening since it seems to be the same as what happened on my laptop with windows XP a few weeks ago. Is there anything more I should be doing so stop system crashes like what happened. I have automatic updates running and will also check myself from time to time. I also have MSE running constantly and will run my self every few days, along with maintence task like ccleaner that I also run every few days. I also try and run scan through 2 flash drives that I have connected when ever there is some thing new placed them or are moved to my laptop and moved back. This computer is for school so I hate having problems with it. Thanks

What small changes are we talking about?

Your hijackthis log is a little odd as you have no 04 entries listed. 04's are programs that run on bootup. Did you disable all of them?

I was missing around with the Quota settings for the C drive really. When I run the hijack this I do get this pop up could that be the problem? I believe I have unable most of the start up programs , on the system configuration pop up and the start up tab only windows live family safety fitler is checked.

No, that message is just for the hosts file. Vista and windows 7 can be a pain with hijackthis. Right click on hijackthis and click on run as admin. If the option doesn't appear on the menu then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on hijacthis for the run as admin option to appear.

Ok here is this log I ran as a Admin. as you stated the option did not show but once I held the shft key down it was available.

Whew, i was searching downloading a you tube video clicked on the first link and all this crap popped up . I have not done anything with it I just closed the tab and the page went away.:confused:

I would suggest you to download a web surfing tool like either web of trust or mcafee site advisor or any other comparable program. It's an addon for your web broswer for when you do searches and it tells you if the site you are about to click on is safe or not.

You clicked on a bad link. You should probably scan your system with malwarebytes just to be safe.

Are you talking about the broswer or an addon? As long as it shows if the website is good or bad, thats half the battle of keeping infections off your system.

will using mozilla do the same if I use it as a browser instead of adding addons to IE? Just trying to figure whats best/safest for me. I thought windows was supposed to notify of bad sites. Instead of doing add ons and adding other browswers I guess it will be best to pay for some protection since what I am doing now is not working?

An antivirus program will not block you from visiting a bad website. Now if when you visit the site and it actually detects something, then yes it should block you from actually opening the page. But if you really want to be safe then use an addon tool like web of trust or a site advisor.

Will do John thanks. I also ran MSE and Malware and they came back clean, no detections.

Thanks again John for the Add on recomendation. I have been using WOT since you posted it and am happy with it. You have to get into it to set it to block sites , not just warn, but its a great tool to help stay away from bad sites. It seems just everyday searching, the first couple sites that pop up are "bad" sites. I had no way to tell other wise before.
