is this card much better than a radeon X1800XT? Enough to upgrade to it. I have a 256 mb X1800XT and the X1950 GT is 512 mb

If you are considering a X1950GT, then you should get the 7900GS or the 7900GT, those cards outperforms the X1950GT, generates less heat and uses less power, although its marginally more expensive than the X1950GT. If you already have a X1800XT I suggest you hold off abit, and get a DX10 card, its just not worth it getting a DX9 at the moment.
