X2 5600+ vs Other

I'm currently building a budget system and just wanted your guys' input quickly.

Most of the Core 2 Duo's are out of my price range. The ABSOLUTE most I can spend on a CPU is $140 and so the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ really caught my eye, because it's right at that price. After reading a few reviews though, people have said that it isn't that great of an overclocker and can only get it to about 3.2GHz from it's original 2.8GHz. That didn't really impress me.

Now, this is where I'm not sure what to do. There are some other CPUs such as the X2 4000+ which people have claimed to get to 3.2GHz. Should I get a cheaper CPU such as this that has GREAT overclocking capability and save the money or should I go with the more expensive 5600+?

Or, am I completely missing the boat here and clueless on what I'm trying to do. Basically, I'm just looking for suggestions on a CPU EXACTLY at or under $140. Please help me choose the best CPU for my money! Thanks!!

the overclocking ability is mild, but with stock heatsinking i know you can get it about 300MHZ faster, but with a nice heatsink i have seen a friend of mine's go to 3.4GHZ

I have a 5600+ and im not really an overclocker but mines at a stable 3.0ghz with zalman 9700 HSF i know i could go higher idle 25c load 34c hope this helps AMD will run hot so get a nice cooler

Core 2 Duo E4500 cost around $124 and it overclocks very well. You can reach 3.0GHz easily with that CPU

For 20 euros more you can get a 6000+ :) which is a much better CPU.

No its not, the 6000 uses more voltage and higher wattage. I can clock the 5600 to 3ghz on less voltage than the 6000 stock. I,ve installed a few of both of them and the 5600s would clock just as good on less voltage. The 6000 is a 125 watt core, the 5600 is just 89 watts and just for stock 200 mhz. Most of the 6000 I,ve installed run hotter and default at 1.4 voltage. Most of the 5600s default at 1.325 and can go to 3.0ghz with 1.325. They set the 6000 as a 125 watts model so I say they can use lower yeild of a core to get to 3 ghz by cracking up the voltage.

Basically, I'm asking...what's the ABSOLUTE best AMD CPU I can buy for $140 or lower? That's my limit. What's the best I can get as far as overclocking ability and performance goes?

Someone above also mentioned the Core 2 Duo E4500 overclocked at 3.0GHz. Has anybody ever had any experience with these? My CPU doesn't absolutely HAVE to be an AMD, and I'm not apposed to Intel, but I've noticed that on my budget AMD's usually give me the best bang for my buck.

I'm not opposed to Intel AT ALL as long as it's better. The only problem is that between the motherboard and CPU I've got $215 maximum. I cannot go any higher. That CPU also needs to be retail, because I can't exactly afford an aftermarket HSF at the moment.

So...what's the best AMD CPU I can get for $140? And if it's not an AMD, what's the best Intel CPU (with HSF) and Motherboard I can get for $215? Thanks guys!!

What about the 5000+ Black edition? It's about 125 euros that means about 130 dollars. You can clock it to 6000+ settings. But it is more expensive then a 5600+. But basically, the 5600+ is a very good CPU.

it doesn't come with a heatsink/fan...you'd have to buy that seperately.

In terms of the E4500, it is a fact that it can OC to 3ghz easily on stock cooling. I know Jet has done so and i've seen it at various other forums around the net. The E4500 would be your best bet if you want to overclock, because it'll kick the crap out of the X2 5600+ for cheaper.

I'm looking at the E4500 on some other websites and it's looking very promising. People have claimed to get 3.2GHz on stock cooling and without raising the voltage hardly any.

This is looking VERY promising. :)
