X700 Pro Vista driver problems

I'm having some troubles with the ATI drivers in Vista. The stock drivers that Vista automatically installs works perfect, but every time I've tried to download the latest Vista ATI drivers, I've had problems. The earlier ones made the screen go blue and lock up. Now with the latest one (March 28th), after I installed it and rebooted, I got the blue screen. This time when I restarted again it worked, but my computer was booting up very slowley. It seems to be alright now, though I haven't tested any games yet.

The reason I need newer drivers is for a new game called "Penumbra Overture", which gave me an error saying My card didn't support vertex shaders or something and told me to update my drivers. Well, I did, and I don't get that error anymore. Instead It locks up after starting a new game.

Anyway, is there any other drivers out there other than the ATI ones that work good with Vista?

I thought there were third party drivers as well, I just can't remember the name.

I'm using Catalyst 7.3 right now, you think thats too new for my video card?

When you see problems with the latest catalyst and drivers on any older ATI card the first step is to go back one or more versions. After a period of time the updates work mostly for the latest cards out and not the one you have. The 9xxx series Radeons are counting on the pre-6.xx catalysts where your model problably is stuck at 6.8-7.1. It won't be much longer before the X1300 series falls into the same catagory there.

What are you talking about the x700 not being able to support Vista? Even the Radeon Express 200 can fully support vista.

And for the latest games, it plays them all the games I've thrown at it, I just can't get this one game to work. I'll boot into XP and see if it works.

The X700 Pro is slightly less of a card then the X850 AGP model. But that will do far better then you think. If my old case was running I could slam Vista on with the Radeon 9550 256mb model there provided the drivers worked. And that seems to have stopped at the 6.5 Catalyst not the 7.3 now out.

well i don't know. i had a 9550 before. i can't really play much latest 3 d games on it before. and graphic cards has been an issue since vista came out. if you use the same graphic card and same computer settings except one is xp and one is vista. the graphic card run faster on XP simply because of vista have better images which require a stronger graphic cards

Well yeah, theres a big difference between a 9550 and an X700 Pro. I haven't had any problems with games in Vista, they seem to run just as good as in XP. So far just the need for speed carbon demo and this Penumbra game haven't worked in Vista.

I booted into XP and the Penumbra game worked fine. It's amazing if you like adventure/puzzle games. The physics in this game are unreal:cool:

well i had x800. and it doesn't run that good on my XP.. i lag in BF 2142 , ceasar IV a little lag in rappelz. also lag in S.T.A.L.K.E.R , company of heroes..
i don't know about you..

Well, the only one of those games I've played is STALKER, and it ran fine as long as I didn't turn the dynamic light setting on.

Well, I turn everything else to high with the dynamic lights off, and it looks alright. When I turn on the dynamic lights the game looks amazing, but it lags too much to play:(

Oh well, the game sucked anyway so I don't give a damn:P

lol no it doesn't !!! just too complicated for u to play

anyways not all games support window vista so it might not be your graphic card's fault. or maybe it is !!

I had no problem running Half Life 2 and some other newer games with the ATI Radeon 9550 256mb model on the last build. But the last Catalyst version that saw the best results for gaming was the 5.11 version. Anything over a 6.5 is mainly for the newer PCI-E models as well as the later X1300 and X1600 series cards.

Different catalyst versions, background apps, and other things can cause that. The X850 is the model favored.
