X850 Problems

I have a Radeon X850 Pro AGP and I gave it to my friend as he was interested in buying it.

He currently has a 9200 Pro in there, he has 1GB of RAM and I don't know what CPU he has.

Well, I took out the 9200 and stuck in the X850 Pro, I had to use the power connectors included with it as the cables he had didn't reach. The old 9200 didn't need a molex connector.

Well, We turned it on and went to install the drivers off the CD, but it didn't read the CD, so we got them off the ATI web-site, they were the right ones too.

He could use it all he wanted in the desktop and in Windows.
But when he gamed, it would play for about a minute and then the screen would go off.

I know the GPU works as I had it in my old computer and it has been kept safe in an anti-static bag since being taken out of the old computer.

My old PSU that ran it was a 250watt with 14A on the +12v rail. The PSU in his computer is a 300watt, with 15A on the +12v rail...

What gives, why doesn't it work?

Thanks :)

How old is his PC, and do you know the specific model motherboard? The reason I ask is because i'm thinking that he may not have an AGP 4x/8x slot, which doesnt supply the same voltage as an AGP 2x/4x slot, so that could be causing the errors when he tries to game.

Yeah, so he could have an AGP x2 or x4 slot...

I don't know the exact model of his motherboard, but I know it's an MSI board, also, I can't remember the CPU, but I know the socket has clips to hold the HSF on, one on each side that yuo click from right to left... maybe that'll help figure out the socket and then the age of the machine?

you need to find out what Speed his AGP slot can take take up to mate...it probably can only take a 2x or 4x:confused:

Everest home edition tells you the AGP max supported speeds in the motherboards....Chipset section.

Ok, I'll take a look at this later toady...

Also, to see if it is his PSU, can I plug an another PSU into the GPU? Ie. Just have the PSU pluegged into the wall and then into the GPU, is that Ok, is it safe?

I'll be going round to his house soon...

I need to know it it'll be Ok to plug a PSU into the GPU, but seperately, so have the PSU in the case power everything except the GPU, then have an external one plugged into the wall and just powering the GPU, is that Ok?

You would need to short pins 14 and 15 because the power supply receives a signal from the motherboard telling it when to turn on and off. If you connect it just to the video card, nothing will happen. The best way is to just take a paperclip and connect it to pins 14 and 15, causing the PSU to come on, and allow you to power up your video card.

Hopefully this will help you understand it better:

An Agpx8 card should work in a x4 slot, it will just quad pump the bus instead of octo pumping it. Hmm.. doesn't sound quite right. :D

There are 3 different types of slots, AGP 1.0 which was 1x and 2x ran at 3.3v and had a slightly different slot (keyed), so that wouldnt work with the newer cards.. AGP 2.0 was 1x, 2x, or 4x, and was compatible with both the previous model cards and the newer cards, so it ran at 3.3v and 1.5v. AGP 3.0 ran at 1x, 2x, 4x, or 8x, but only supplied 1.5v, so it wouldnt work with the older cards.
