x850PE Overheating

I have an x850 pe that for some reason all of a sudden started randomly overheating. I downloaded powerstrip and turned down the mem clock and core clock 40mhz and it still overheats. It even crashed a couple times. I really don't want to have to spend $200 to replace it with a worse card.
 
are you sure its overheating? normally cards don't overheat... did you put an after-market cooler on it? if its overheating and you didn't put an after-market cooler on the thing, then send it back.
 
It is the stock card and I'm sure it was an overheating. I downloaded atitool and set the fans to blow 100% at 75C so now it doesn't overheat, it is just loud.
 
What does ATI Tool say it runs at idle, and after playing a game?

Mine runs at around 30-35C idle, and around 60C under load.
 
Make sure you're getting plenty of ventilation in your case. I had problems with my 6600GT overheating until I moved my case from on my carpet to on a hard surface (so the bottom holes weren't covered up), and I also repositioned my case fans so they are blowing air out instead of in.
 
I have the same problem with my x850xt. I downloaded Ati tool and set the fans speeds differently. It would run at %5 normaly, and then the fan would kick in at 100% at 96C. I changed it a little bit and now it doesnt overheat.
 
I dont know what the temps were before I changed the fans but I know that it was over 100C because the 100% fan would kick in at 96C but then it wouldnt start beeping until it had some more time to heat up.
 
Also its in a dell case with the only fan blowing in or out of the case is the cpu fan and the video card fan. there are no case fans. I'm buying a new mobo, cpu, ram, and case so it should cool a lot better with the gaming case with 2 case fans.
 
I strongly recomend if you haven already done so, to either have the fan run at 100% all the time, or configure the fan speeds using ATI Tool to have them come on at lower temps.
 
If you feel confident about doing it i would suggest removing the heatsink from the card, cleaning the thermal paste off with alcohol and then repasting the thermal module with arctic silver 5 and reseating it.

It can be a little daunting and if you dont have the confidence i would suggest that you dont do it.
 
I set the fan to blow 100% at 75C already and it seems to have stopped the overheating. And I definitely dont have the confidence to do that with my card cause I know that if I mess it up its back to an x300 for me.

Yeah, it's not surprising that your card is overheating. Most Dells aren't built to handle the heat produced by today's video cards. Getting a new case and a couple fans will help a lot, it's amazing what a little air movement will do!
