Xbox 360 DVD-ROM Drive

Hi,
So I'm buying a broken Xbox 360 on eBay in hopes that I can restore it. The problem with this is that it won't read discs. So I say to myself: "I'll buy one of the Xbox 360 DVD-ROM Drives and just replace it. I know how to do that."

So here's what I'm wondering - will any of the Xbox 360 DVD-ROM Drives work with any Xbox 360 Premium system?

In case you were wondering, here's a list of the various drives Microsoft has cycled through.

What I'm asking is can I buy a BenQ VAD6038 on eBay and put it in? Even if the previous DVD-ROM drive in there was, say, a Toshiba TS-H943? Will it still work or will I have to do something else?

I've worked on a few 360s, and don't think any old drive will work as a plug-in-play. I believe you need a similar drive then need to flash it, in order for it to work.

It's not "any old drive"...the Toshiba I use for my desktop is "any old drive". This BenQ is a drive that Microsoft currently uses now in its Xbox 360's.

actually ms uses lite on drives in the 360, but in order to change drives you will need to hook it into the computer, dump the drive key, and flash the original drive key to the new dvd drive, or the 360 will just be a big paper weight, also if u dont think u can handle that and follow the tutorials from 360mods.net, then id suggest maybe to replace the laser

Wow, he tries you help you and you're a smartass about it. I love it.

Bottom line is no, it's more complicated than just replacing the drive with another drive from an XBox, even one that is the same model.

How do you figure that I'm being a smartass about it? I was explaining what I meant by old drive. If I came off as a smartass sorry, but those were NOT my intentions. Thanks for your help everyone.
