Xbox 360 HD Question

I'm not going to lie I have not researched this question yet, but I plan to. This maybe a stupid question, it may not be but I'm going to ask it anyways.

Is it possible to use a standard external hard drive and use it on the Xbox360? See my little brother has the 360 and is using the memory card at the moment, but I have a spare 160G external drive that I'm not using and if it will work I will give it to him.

So is the possible or not?

I've heard that it's possible but it's not legal. The reason you can't just plug in an external HDD is because of formatting issues...or so I hear. Hopefully MS will let us use external HDDs. You can plug it in a see what happens, maybe you'll be lucky and it'll work.

I've read on this very forum by other members that it is supposed to work. I do not know the legality's of it, I do not know why it would be illegal though. I'm not saying whether it is legal or illegal, I simply do not know.

The best way to find out if it works is to try it as Yasu mentioned.

So far what I have come across in googleing the crap out of this topic is pretty much what you guys have said. It will store media files from the PC and act like a media center, but you would not beable to hold any game content at all. I just dont understand why it wouldnt work for game files, because isnt the Xbox basically just a PC or am I wrong? I dont know much about the Xbox stuff because I have always been a PS fan, so I'm very ignorant when it comes to the Xbox.

You cant put things on the HDD, and the 360 will only read FAT32. I have tried, i have experience, and you can only read files off of the drive.
