Xbox DvD Drive

I've got a friend who's xbox has a bad dvd drive. He'd like me to get him a replacement. Can I just buy a standard IDE dvd drive off of newegg for him or will i have to find one that came out of another xbox somewhere on ebay?
 
360 optical drives are proprietary to the console. Once you get the drive (of which there are three or four different variants, some are supposedly better than others) you can't just pop it in, you'll actually have to flash the original drives firmware over to the replacement, as both console and the drive are "keyed" to work only with each other.

Sucks.
 
Oh, oops. My bad. I might be wrong but I think you can use any regular old drive, but you'd have to do some modding. Otherwise just buy an authorized replacement from M$ or Ebay, or something
 
yeah, the xbox i that needs the replacement drive has been modded. i think i might pop it open and see if the drive looks proprietary in any way shape or form.
 
you can buy replacements yeah,all xbox drives are ide,but you cant buy a standard IDE Drive, (if you mean a normal pc dvd drive no, it wont work) you need one for xbox. there's samsung and philips drives for the Original Xbox. i suggest you go samsung.
(there's another model i forgot)
my box was modded (when i still had it) and i remember when my drive went bad, god i couldn't take it !! :(
hehe at least i had games loaded on the hard drive 140GB baby
